As the star runs out of nuclear fuel, some of its mass flows into its core. Eventually, the core is so heavy that it cannot withstand its own gravitational force. When iron forms in the core of a star, it can no longer undergo fusion. This means the star can no longer release energy, and it collapses violently. This sends out a shockwave through the star. The outer portion of the star explodes in a supernova.
