Cell from the tips of onion roots are commonly used when studying mitosis because the cells of an onion roots are constantly dividing so the root can continue to grow deeper into the soil. Not all of the cells will be at exactly the same stage of mitosis, and some may not be undergoing mitosis at all. This explains why Karen is noticing that the cells do not all look the same.

The cells are in different stages of mitosis. Remember, mitosis has 4 major phases: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase.

Cell B is in Anaphase. The homologous chromosomes are moving away from each other, towards opposite ends of the cell. I remember this stage because Anaphase and Away both start with “A”.

Cells E are in metaphase. The homologous chromosomes are lining up in the middle of the cell. I remember this stage because Metaphase and Middle both start with “M”.

this process is called "phosphorylation." a phosphate bond joins adenosine diphosphate to form adenosine triphosphate.
