In an energy pyramid (food chain), if the biomass of the species is increasing as one is moving towards the successive trophic levels, then it can be said to be an inverted energy pyramid.  

Parasites in a food chain results into an inverted energy pyramid. Here in this case ,  insects lie at the base of the food chain and small birds start feeding on them which are further fed upon by some larger animal. In this way biomass is increasing as  we move upward in a food chain and hence it will produce a negative energy pyramid.
