In the earth’s interior, heat gets transferred by convection currents.  

The convection currents are caused by differential heat generated by the movement of fluid. In case of Earth, the molten rock in the mantle moves upwards due to the heat caused by radioactive decay. This semi liquid molten rock cycles and flows through convection current in mantle. The gravitational force creates pressure on matter and material present on earth mantle. Hence, all the elements present on earth’s surface are subjected to pressure that creates heat driving convection. During the process of convection, the lighter material which are more buoyant, creates differences in buoyancy. These differences create vertical buoyant forces. The heat generated leads to convection in earth’s mantle causing the hotter mantle material to rise to the surface and cooler material to sink towards the center of the earth.

Other factors responsible for convection currents are the density of the material found on the earth’s mantle. The low density material comes to the top due to the heat causing the material to expand further and space out. Sometimes, there are changes in the pressure which affects the density and heat of the mantle leading to fluctuations in the convection currents that causes shifting of material.  

The earths rotation and spin causes convection currents and spin of earth has influence on the travel of convection currents.
