The environment and adaptations of ostriches to explain how they evolved to survive in their environment.

Adaptations (Physical)

Ostriches commonly live in the African savanna or hotter regions, because of this the ostrich has a lot of exposed skin such as the legs, and head. The ostrich also has a large mouth it uses as a defense against predators like cheetahs. The feet, are long and flat, to make treading though the desert very easy and swift, and when the run. the tall heel give them extra push. Over time ostriches feathers have gotten thicker and thicker. The theory for this is because of all the predators that keep coming for ostriches, they get more feathers to make themselves look bigger and more intimidating. The ostrich is built for survival in the desert regions of Africa.

Adaptations (Behavioral)

Ostriches have developed many different behavioral adaptations. Like how they take turns guarding the egg and alert other animals of danger. A famous myth about ostriches is that they put their heads into the ground. That myth is not true. But they do lay low down on the African Savanna, watching other animals for any signs of threat. They tend to "peck" at their young to make them toughen up. And males get into "pecking" fights normally in the savanna.
