In 1970, the Environment protection agency (EPA) proposed the Clean Air Act applicable in US. The act has been amended many times to keep pace with new information. Under this act EPA has established standard limits for six air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), lead (pb), nitrogen dioxide(NO₂), sulfur dioxide(SO₂), ozone (O₃) and particulate matter.  The clean air act has established two quality standards:

1. Protection of public health, involving prevention of population from asthma and other respiratory diseases.

2. Protection against damage to animals, crops, plants and buildings.
