The dermal tissues of the stem are covered by the epidermal layers this layer covers the underlying tissues. The woody plants exhibit a tough, waterproof outer epidermal layer which is called as bark. This layer is made up of cork cells. This layer is rough in texture and protects the plant from damage. The rough texture describes most woody stems.
