Cutaneous membrane refers to the skin of the body. It is the outer, soft tissue covering the body of the vertebrates. It has various functions in the body of which thermoregulation is a crucial one. Thermoregulation refers to the process of maintaining the internal core temperature of the body.

Body temperature that gets elevated during fever is regulated by two processes called the sweating or perspiration and vasodilation. When the sweat glands of the skin release the sweat, it gets evaporated and cools the body by taking away body's heat. Vasodilation refers to the process of expansion of the blood vessels. The enlarged blood vessels near the skin carries a higher amount of blood near the skin and helps in losing the extra heat from the body.
