Coral provide habitat and nutrients to the algae. The food prepared by algae is consumed by the corals and waste excreted by the coral in the form of ammonium is used by algae as nutrients.

I opted to explain the symbiotic relationship between coral and algae.

Both the algae and coral get  benefitted in the mutualistic symbiotic relationship.  

Algae consists of chlorophyll that helps them in carrying out photosynthesis and thus they are  able to produce food by capturing sunlight. However, coral provide habitat and nutrients to the algae. The food prepared by algae is consumed by the corals and waste excreted by the coral in the form of ammonium is used by algae as nutrients.  

The algae also impart color to the corals due to the green pigment present in them. Due to this symbiotic relationship, the nutrients keep on rotating with in the coral reefs instead of entering into the sea or ocean.  

These coral then build reefs which is quick and easy while being in a symbiotic relationship with algae as algae helps in formation of calcium carbonates .  

The algae named zooxanthellae live with in the tissue cells of the reef building corals. Along with food Zooxanthellae also produces oxygen and organic compounds like glucose, glycerol, and amino acid which are used by coral to produce proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, and calcium carbonate
