Doctors are seeing an alarming increase in the number of cases of tuberculosis (tb) that is resistant to drugs commonly used to treat the disease. tb is difficult to pass to other people without prolonged contact, but it is often fatal if it is not treated. how will doctors most likely respond to someone who has an active case of drug-resistant tuberculosis? a.) doctors will not be able to do anything to someone with drug-resistant tb. b.) doctors will expose other people to the patient to those people develop a resistance to tb. c.) doctors will use other drugs that are known to be able to treat tb, even if they are less effective than the common drugs. d.) doctors will use the patient to test the effectiveness of new antibiotics that have not been tried on people yet.

A.) Doctors will not be able to do anything to help someone with drug-resistant TB.
Not true.  Drug resistant TB may be difficult to cure, it is costly, it takes a long time, and could be painful (multiple injections).  However, there are drugs (second line drug) for this purpose.

B.) Doctors will expose other people to the patient to help those people develop a resistance to TB.
This is definitely not the way to go.  It will likely infect more people than those who will develop resistance.

C.) Doctors will use other drugs that are known to be able to treat TB, even if they are less effective than the common drugs.
Yes, there are "second line drugs" which can treat drug-resistant TB.  These drugs are more expensive ($1000+), take long time to cure (8-12 months), have more side effects, and sometimes by injection, and have lower success rates (around 75%).

D.) Doctors will use the patient to test the effectiveness of new antibiotics that have not been tried on people yet.
It's not the job of a regular doctor to do this.  It will be researchers (who might also be doctors) to do testing and research of the new drugs (may or may not be antibiotics).
