Minerals are essential nutrients. In fact, there are 16 essential minerals: (copper, manganese, iodine, and selenium, molybdenum, chromium, fluoride, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, and zinc).

Minerals which are also called micronutrients play important roles in the body such as: maintain blood pressure, bone health and fluid & electrolyte balance, and make new cells; deliver oxygen to cells; and contribute to normal muscle and nerve functioning.

Minerals are essential elements, which include nitrogen, phosphorus, chlorine, zinc, iron among others, obtained from food. They do not provide calories per gram , like the case of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.
