There a few correct ways.  Each way is written in "binomial nomenclature" ; which is a form of taxonomy invented by Carl Linneaus that classified and identifiesan organism by two groups, using two separate words — in the order of:  

1)  the "genus" (in which the "first letter" of the word is ALWAYS in uppercase; and the rest of the word is ALWAYS in lowercase) ; 

followed by a "space" ; and then:

2) the "species" — which is ALWAYS is "all lowercase letters ."


The following are correct ways to write the scientific name for the American black bear — in print.


1)  Ursus  americanus .   {This is the preferred method).

2)  Ursus  americanus . 

{ Note:  Each word is underlined separately.
           There is no additonal "bold font" or "italics" .} .


3)  Ursus  americanus .  

{ Note: This is all in bold font—no "italics" or "underlining" .}.
