Style refers to a distinctive appearance or design, done in a particular form. Style can determine in what ways artists' handle their materials and mediums. Think of is as a "signature look", a distinctive mode of expression. In this way, it can also refer to common characteristics shared by a group of artists, a culture, an era, etc as style can be shared.
