American abstract painter Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) was known for her technique of printing absorbed color patches onto the canvas.

The artist gained fame in 1957, when the avant-garde Color Field movement was formed in the United States, which focused on mixing vivid colors without applying color standards.

That generation was characterized by creating a wide color gamut on large screens using creams, stains and sprays. Frankenthaler mixed the colors with resin or solvent so that the pigment could absorb color stains within the fabric itself.

The technique first appeared in her painting Mountains and Sea (1952),

The technique ended the gestural brushstroke that distinguished abstract expressionism, in favor of pouring or splattering the canvas with very diluted acrylic paint, fusing the background and the figure through color.
