Hello, Rumblzlyenge. So, let's look at the statement. "Their fur helps them defend themselves." Ok, first, ask yourself, what is a verb? Well, a verb is a word used to describe an action, so what is the action? Defend. Now, I think defend is the only verb, don't you? Next, past, present, or future. "Their fur helps them defend themselves." I would think Present. If it was past, the statement would be: "Their fur helped them defend themselves." If it was future, the statement would be: "Their fur will help them defend themselves." I hope I helped :D
