Sugar went, at ten years old to the Saint-Denis Abbey in 1091, where he was to study in the Church school, taught by monks. Here he also worked as a secretary, a provost prior to being appointed as the abbot in 1122. The rest of his life he spent reforming the monastery, its monks, construction on the church and developing its treasury.
