From the Early Classical era, this shows Apollo with Battling Lapiths and Centaurs. The Greeks had several confrontations with the Persians before 480 BCE, who threatened their freedom, but by 480 BCE, the Greeks' formidable armies and navy had destroyed their foes. The Greeks gained confidence as a result of their major wins, and their art took on a new form. As a demonstration of strength, Apollo stands in this sculpture, calming the dispute with his outstretched arm.
