Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry Annemarie Johansen lives in Denmark, in 1943. Her town is occupied by Nazis, a German political party whose goal was to eliminate Jews. Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen, is Jewish. Fearing for their lives, Ellen and her family decide to flee the country.
