Why do we group artwork with similar charaterstics into periods or styles ?

Despite the many examples of pottery found from the jomon period, there is no evidence of language used. why do you think they did not include any form of communication on these vessels like the egyptians and the greeks? do you think these pieces had a different purpose? if so, explain your answer.
