19th Century:  Efforts were made to suit the scenery to the individual play  interior set, exterior scenes, entrances, street scenes, etc.

--Middle of 19th Century:

Gradual shirking of the apron, addition of orchestra seats, elimination of painted backdrops, closing of the wings, which gave the illusion of left and right walls onstage

20th Century: a. realism or naturalism stage sets were designed with selective realism plastics - three dimensional structures & forms, cut outs

86-24 = 62 (since length is 24 ft longer subtract 24 then divide by 2 for width)

62/2 = 31

width = 31 feet

length = 31 +24 = 55 feet

check: 31*2 = 62, 55*2 = 110,  110+62 = 172
