Rite of Passage: One of the theories proposed for the context of prehistoric cave paintings is that they played a part in organized rites and rituals, particularly rites of passage. These rituals, conducted in caves, would have helped to strengthen group identity. These rites of passage connected the individual to the community and, perhaps, to something beyond both the individual and community. Have you experienced a rite of passage, or an initiation? These could occur in a formalized religious setting or in more informal social groups (you and your friends). In an essay, describe your experience. Your emphasis should be on the art. Consider the architecture, the outfits, the decorations, any objects or images involved. Additionally, consider how the experience changed you. How did it change your relationship to the group? Did your experience connect you to something beyond self or community?
