When Mrs. Drover went to her former home to get some things, she found a letter reportedly from her former lover who had come to meet her "at the hour arranged" as they had promised twenty five years ago. And in her memory where she, as a younger version of herself, met the "the soldier in the garden had not ever completely seen his face", she was cut in the hand by his uniform's button. This gave her physical pain, even though it was just a memory. This detail seemed to foreshadow a sinister event that will be their devastating reunion.
