Passage 1

Bears

Bears are large animals that eat meat and plants. They are found everywhere in the world except in Australia and Antarctica. They are shy and like to stay alone. They are also good at hiding themselves in times of danger. Like many animals, bears hibernate in winter. This means that they go to sleep for several months in winter and wake up during springtime. This is because food is scarce in winter. Animals like ground squirrels hibernate too, but they wake up now and then to eat something. However, bears hibernate for as many as seven months. After the hibernation, bears are very hungry, but there is enough food for them. Insects, nuts, berries, sap, branches, and roots are some of the things that bears feed on.

Passage 2

Polar Bears

Polar bears are the largest carnivorous land animals. They are found in the Arctic region, which is covered with ice for most of the year. They have thick fur, a long neck, and a narrow skull that helps them live on land as well as swim in water. The thick fur even covers their feet and keeps them warm. They feed on walruses, seals, and beluga whales. They usually hunt alone and not in groups. During winters, when food is not available, polar bears go to their caves to hibernate. After a long sleep all through winter, polar bears wake up feeling hungry. The sheets of ice in the rivers and seas begin to melt and this helps the polar bears wade through the water to find food for themselves.
