Iknow this is a dumb question but can a children’s piano keyboard work as well as a regular one?

It depends on what is expected to play from it. if you don't mind simple notes, then sure, but there won't be as much song complexion; meaning, depending on how many keys on the piano there are, you couldn't necessarily play all the chords of Fur Elise, but you could still probably play the simple notes.
