Explanation:

1) The Mona Lisa is the greatest example of Italian Renaissance paintings. It portraits Lisa Gherardini. The woman is sitting in an armchair, in a three quarter profile, with her hands folded, one resting on top of the other. The main characteristic of this painting - which also contributed in its path to fame - is the enigmatic half-smile. On the background, the Italian countryside is barely alluded, out of focus, thanks to a technique called 'sfumato', which means 'blended'.

2) There are three main elements/principals in this portrait:

1 - Color: Da Vinci uses a technique which is called 'sfumato' (it italian meaning: blended) which makes the colors, the strokes, and the style blend in together very gently, without creating interference.

2 - Perspective: Areal perspective, da Vinci was one of the firsts to use it. This element consists of having a close up subject, in contrast with an out of focus background. This technique is supposed to give the illusion of depth.

3 - Unity: Although the transition of colors to different shades is quite clear, they also seem to perfectly blend in together, creating harmony, unity and balance.

3) The Mona Lisa is one of the greatest representations of paintings of the 15th century and the Italian Renaissance period. It was highly innovative for its time and it still hides mysteries today. The mysterious half-smile and the enigmatic face are a few of the elements that nobody seems to understand. Many conspiracies have been made on this piece; some people claim that it could represent da Vinci, dressed as a woman.

But myths apart, the Mona Lisa was painted by one of the greatest artists (and minds) of all time.
