They want you to become better, & so they try to change your behaviour. If you act while in prison like a good citizen, and know what you did wrong, they would cut your sentence down. So it pretty means that, during the sentence, they want you to 1) acknowledge your wrongdoing, 2) solve the problem, & 3) make sure you do not do it again
