The theories are alike in that they both deal with different kinds of intelligence. However, they differ because Sternberg focuses more on environmental intelligence, whereas Gardner focuses on individual skills.

Explanation:

To be more specific, Sternberg looks at the characteristics of an individual and seeing how they compare to other individuals and their environment. Meaning he only compares them on the basis of the outside influence that they may be exposed to, and attributes any intelligence gained as being an adaptation as a result of the environment.

Gardener believed that intelligence was a skill, like all things, that can be improved on. Thus his theories and studies are based on this very mindset. In his studies, it makes sense that he focuses more on individual skills, because that's something that isn't inherently based on what happens in the environment. It's just their own individual skills that dictate the study.
