Thomas Malthus predicted that population would outstrip food production,
resulting in wars, famines, and other “negative checks." Yet, although malnutrition
is common in many countries, true famines have rarely, if ever, occurred in
countries with democratic institutions and free presses. Explain what may
account for this distinction between food production and food availability.
