Due to the way the Earth is tilted, areas to the North and South of the planet experience four distinct seasons arising from the sun hitting these areas more  at different times during the year.

With New Zealand being so far south, it will definitely get all four seasons in the year. It will be colder when the sun is focusing on the Northern hemisphere and warmer when the sun is focusing on the south.
