Read the passage below At your local grocery store, you will come across foods that have been treated with pesticides. Pesticides are used to kill harmful insects and other things that threaten the food supply. The use of pesticides helps keep food inexpensive and plentiful for the US population.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determines the legal limit for the amount of pesticides that can be safely used on food. The EPA states that the amount of pesticides present on foods grown in the United States is generally below the legal limit. However, the EPA recommends that you wash and peel your fruits and vegetables before eating them to reduce the amount of pesticide that may remain on your food. To avoid pesticides, some people have chosen to eat only foods that are “organic,” or grown without pesticides. There is much debate about the advantages of organic foods over foods that contain some level of pesticides. One thing is for sure: it is up to you to educate yourself about where your food comes from and how it is grown so that you can make good choices about what you eat.
