John Locke, he refuted the theory of the divine right of kings and argued that all persons are endowed with natural rights to life, liberty, and property and that rulers who fail to protect those rights may be removed by the people, by force if necessary. The American colonists used this idea as the base for revolution to fight British and eventually won the independent and freedom. It was also drafted in the Declaration of Independence.

Men are born and remain free and equal in rights, including liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression was an enlightenment philosophy outlined in the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. After the French Revolution, Feudalism was coming to an end, and people from all social classes were able to have equal rights, justice, freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

The separation of the church and state influenced revolutions in America, France, and Latin America. French philosopher Voltaire initiated the idea of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state. This idea later on influenced Thomas Jefferson on his famous expression “separation of church and state”. In America, it was written in the first amendment to the US Constitution. In France The “freedom to practice religion” has been recognized since 1905 when the Law on the Separation of the Church and State (la loi sur la séparation de l'Église et de l'État) came into effect. Throughout Latin American history, the Roman Catholic Church has played a tumultuous role, from passive "soul saving" to aggressive revolutionary actions. As the countries have turned toward democracy, that along with modernization comes the promotion of  democratic ideals including the separation of Church.  Many countries were working toward a separation of Church and State.
