Comments: The parents in this show appear to be the family next door, making their parenting style very realistic. The show tends to be nostalgic because of the type of ideal family it portrays.

Permissive

Example: Mother of Regina (“Mean Girls”): The mother in this movie spoils her child, gives no consequences, is warm and accepting of her child and her friends, and makes few demands. She acts like a friend to Regina instead of a parental figure.

Comments: While this movie exaggerates the role of a permissive parent to make it funny, much of the mother’s behavior is similar to that which occurs in a permissive household. It even leads to the consequences expected from this parenting style, including little self-control and engaging in risky behavior.
