Prior to 1800 and till early part of 1800, people had to rely on either animal or wind power to move from one place to other place. People had to rely on Rafts and Flatboats as a medium of transport for ferrying goods. Soon, Keelboats replaced Flatboats due to better rapidity and control. However, it proved to be a major disadvantageous factor as these boats can transport only one way due to its limitations. Hence, people had to rely on road for return trip which took much longer.  

With the invention of first Steam Boat by Robert Fulton in 1807, it was possible for people to travel in both directions of Hudson River. This marked a first revolution in transportation during early 1800s.  

For the betterment of water transportation, Canals were built to connect lakes, rivers and Oceans. The Erie Canal running between Hudson River and Great Lakes was completed by 1825 and it helped people to reduce transportation cost..  

The National Road, which is also otherwise called Cumberland Road, built between 1811 and 1837 was the first improved highway that helped thousands of settlers who were looking to head Western states. It was the invention of rail road marked a complete transportation revolution in United States History and stimulated the demand and growth of Steel, Iron and Coal Commerce.
