WISC-V takes 45-65 minutes to manage. This results in a Full-Scale IQ (previously known as intelligence quotient or IQ score) that represents a child's general intellectual abilities. It also provides five primary index scores: Verbal Understanding Index, Visual-Spatial Index, Fluid Reasoning Index, Working Memory Index, and Processing Speed Index. These indices represent the ability of children in the discrete cognitive domain. Five additional composite scores can be derived from various combinations of primary or primary and secondary subtitles.

The original WISC (Wechsler, 1949) is an adaptation of some of the subjects that make up the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale (Wechsler, 1939) but also displays several subtests specifically designed for it. Subtests are arranged on the Verbal and Performance scale and provide scores for Verbal IQ (VIQ), Performance IQ (PIQ), and Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ).

WISC is one of the tests in Wechsler's intelligence scale series. Subjects 16 and over were tested with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), and children aged two years and six months to seven years and seven months were tested with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI). There are several overlaps between tests: children aged 6 years 0 months to 7 years 7 months can complete WPPSI or WISC; children aged 16 can complete WISC-V or WAIS-IV. Different floor and ceiling effects can be achieved by using different tests, enabling a greater understanding of a child's abilities or deficits. This means that 16-year-old adolescents with intellectual disabilities can be tested using WISC-V so that doctors can see their knowledge base (lowest level).
